New landing system to cut noise at Frankfurt Airport
28 May 2013
DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung and Fraport have announced a collaboration to implement a satellite and ground-based augmentation system (GBAS). The GBAS will allow segmented and/or curved approaches, helping in cutting down aircraft noise, even in areas beneath the final approach path. The new landing system is expected to reduce the impact of flight operations on the surrounding areas, while boosting the capacity and cost-effectiveness of the airport. Fraport executive board chairman Dr Stefan Schulte said that the move should help in continuing to reduce the impact of flight operations on the area surrounding the airport. “We are implementing another item of the set of measures laid down by the Alliance for Noise Abatement,” Schulte said. Set to be the first of its kind to be used at an international airport in Europe by 2014, the system will increase the glide slope angle at all runways from the existing 3° to 3.2°. Read more »

Edinburgh Airport uses face scans to cut security queues
28 May 2013
Cameras will regularly scan the faces of passengers at Edinburgh Airport in Scotland in the latest move by officials to cut queues at security screenings. The state-of-the-art facial recognition equipment from Human Recognition Systems installed throughout the baggage check and security area was scheduled to go live in early summer 2013. Trials of the MFlow Journey cameras had started during April as airport management company Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) conceded it had recently failed to contain lengthy queues. Passengers had been forced to wait for up to 30 min to get through the security screening zone during peak periods. Read more »

Chinese airport launches mobile check-in service
28 May 2013
With the universal popularity of the QR code or 2D barcode, Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport in China has recently launched a web/mobile check-in service via 2D barcode. Passengers who don’t need to have their baggage checked can make their seat selection and complete the check-in process for themselves on the internet by accessing to www.xmairport.com.cn. After submitting their personal ID information, passengers can choose to print their boarding pass themselves or receive a text message containing a QR code, which they can show to security staff at airport’s security access. At present, Xiamen Airport provides mobile boarding options at four security access points for domestic flights in total, including A, E, F and G on the third floor of the terminal, each of which is equipped with a barcode reader. By scanning the 2D barcode from passengers’ mobile phones, security staff can confirm the barcode’s authenticity and then give them boarding passes if confirmed. Read more »

L-3 meets EU standards with checkpoint security scanners
28 May 2013
L-3 Security & Detection Systems (SDS) has announced that its ProVision® 2 checkpoint security scanner meets European aviation standards for security scanners following testing under the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) Common Evaluation Process (CEP). The ProVision 2 is an image-free system that automatically detects objects safely and effectively while ensuring passenger privacy. The Provision 2 offers a balance between addressing regulatory requirements and meeting airport operational demands for high throughput and minimal false alarms. The passenger experience with the ProVision 2 is designed to be convenient, straightforward and efficient, requiring only a single position during a 1.5-sec scan. The system uses safe millimetre wave technology to automatically detect potential aviation threats, both metallic and non-metallic, by highlighting any anomalies on a generic mannequin. Read more »

New Welsh GSE plant opens
28 May 2013
Wales, U.K.-based Aircraft Maintenance Support Services (AMSS), which designs and manufactures a wide range of ground support equipment for airlines and military agencies across the world, has officially opened a new GBP 1.9 million facility. The investment, which was supported by a GBP 700 000 funding package from Barclays Bank and GBP 300 000 from the Welsh Government’s Economic Growth Fund, is set to create a minimum of 28 new jobs over the next three years, in addition to 23 already created since the commencement of this development, and will enable the company to meet the growing demand for its products. Managing Director, Andy Cookson, said: “The new building and investment into new plant and machinery will enable us to increase capacity to meet demand as well as create real manufacturing jobs here in Wales and give us the confidence to reintroduce an apprenticeship scheme to the mutual benefit of the company and the community in Pyle and Bridgend.” Read more »

New fire trucks for Stansted Airport
28 May 2013
Stansted Airport’s Fire Service has taken delivery of its fifth and final state-of-the-art Rosenbauer Panther fire engine as part of a GBP 4 million upgrade to its fire-fighting fleet. The six-wheel-drive Panthers have replaced the airport’s 20-year-old Kronenburg vehicles. The Rosenberg Panther is one of the most advanced airport fire vehicles in the world and is technologically superior to any appliance Stansted Airport has previously had. Each truck can carry 11 500 l of water and 1420 l of foam and is equipped with a Caterpillar Euro 5 engine that meets strict European environmental standards. Capable of accelerating from 0 to 50 mph in less than 28 sec, the Panthers have a range of innovative specifications including rear-wheel steering, infrared cameras and an engine that starts automatically. Two vehicles in the new fleet also feature a unique extendable boom enabling fire-fighters to spray water and foam on high engine and double-deck aircraft, such as the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and Airbus A380, using a joystick control from inside the vehicle cabin. Delta Air Lines goes Green with GSE
28 May 2013
CTE and Delta Air Lines recently partnered on a project to repower 35 diesel-engined ground support equipment to all-electric units. The project, in cooperation with EPA Region 4, and in partnership with Clean Cities Atlanta, was a collaboration of corporate, government, non-profit, and community-based partners and demonstrates a continued commitment to sustainability and emission reduction. Conversion of the GSE units was completed in February 2013. Hercules Engine Components repowered 24 TUG Belt Loaders, JBT Corporation repowered 11 FMC Container Loaders, while Averest Inc. supplied the batteries for the converted units. The repowering process included removal of the existing diesel engine, fuel tank, transmission, and cooling system and replacing them with an electric drive motor, battery pack, and electric control system. Once underway, conversion of each container loader took less than three weeks, while conversion of each belt loader took less than one week. The repowered units were placed into operation at the LEED-certified 12-gate International Terminal F, at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, GA, where each gate is equipped with electric chargers that can support the upgraded GSE. Over the life of the equipment, the project is expected to save more than 11 500 t of greenhouse gases and in excess of 1 million gal of diesel fuel. -- The project was funded through a USD 1.4 million grant from the U.S. EPA under the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Programme, through the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA). TSA expands ‘PreCheck’ programme
13 May 2013
Some U.S. travellers who fly abroad are now eligible to zip through special airport screening lines without removing their shoes, belts and jackets or taking laptops and liquids out of carry-on bags. The TSA has announced that it was expanding its ‘PreCheck’ programme to passengers flying abroad from 40 participating U.S. airports, including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The PreCheck programme was previously limited to U.S. citizens who travel domestically and participate in a frequent-flier program with Alaska, American, Delta, United or US Airways. From 7 May 2013, travellers who participated in PreCheck could use the faster screening lines when flying to select international destinations. PreCheck is also available to Canadian citizens who participate in NEXUS, a pre-screening program for travellers who frequently fly between the U.S. and Canada. Read more »

Canada introduces airport risk assessment system
13 May 2013
The Canadian Government is proposing to introduce a security risk assessment system that ranks the level of danger in airports as part of new regulations to prevent terrorism and other threats to aviation security. The measures, including new security training and policies at airports, are estimated to cost about CAD 11.6 million over 25 years. The proposal would require detailed security plans, identifying risks, new training to match international standards, emergency plans as well as information sharing between multiple security agencies. An aviation security level system would create three alert levels. The first level would be the baseline, level two would be ‘elevated’, and level three would warn of a ‘critical or imminent’ threat. The different levels would require operators to take specific security precautions, but would not give them any extra powers, said the government’s proposal. Read more »
