TSA expands ‘PreCheck’ programme

Some U.S. travellers who fly abroad are now eligible to zip through special airport screening lines without removing their shoes, belts and jackets or taking laptops and liquids out of carry-on bags. The TSA has announced that it was expanding its ‘PreCheck’ programme to passengers flying abroad from 40 participating U.S. airports, including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The PreCheck programme was previously limited to U.S. citizens who travel domestically and participate in a frequent-flier program with Alaska, American, Delta, United or US Airways. From 7 May 2013, travellers who participated in PreCheck could use the faster screening lines when flying to select international destinations. PreCheck is also available to Canadian citizens who participate in NEXUS, a pre-screening program for travellers who frequently fly between the U.S. and Canada. Mehr »
Canada introduces airport risk assessment system

The Canadian Government is proposing to introduce a security risk assessment system that ranks the level of danger in airports as part of new regulations to prevent terrorism and other threats to aviation security. The measures, including new security training and policies at airports, are estimated to cost about CAD 11.6 million over 25 years. The proposal would require detailed security plans, identifying risks, new training to match international standards, emergency plans as well as information sharing between multiple security agencies. An aviation security level system would create three alert levels. The first level would be the baseline, level two would be ‘elevated’, and level three would warn of a ‘critical or imminent’ threat. The different levels would require operators to take specific security precautions, but would not give them any extra powers, said the government’s proposal. Mehr »
Laweco launches Green GSE

Laweco Maschinen- und Apparatebau GmbH, located in Espelkamp, Germany, has announced the launch customer for its battery-powered Green Line Highloader, the Cargo Master CML 7, following a year of successful equipment testing. Flughafen München GmbH, the operator of Munich Airport, has placed an initial order for two of the model CML 7 S Green Line units. The airport operator sees these new additions to its GSE fleet as an important step in its ongoing efforts to reduce CO2 emissions. Another important reason for the acquisition of the Laweco Green Line cargo loaders are their significantly lower operating and maintenance costs compared to conventional diesel-powered units. Long-term environmental and economic sustainability in aircraft ground handling operations have been the goals of the manufacturer’s Green Line product development. Laweco regards the new ‘green’ loaders as an important expansion of its diesel-powered Cargo Master products that meet the requirements of modern, environmentally responsible airports. Mehr »
VISEON Bus drives through insolvency proceedings

On 26 April 2013, the VISEON Bus GmbH filed for the start of insolvency proceedings. After unanimous nomination by the committee of creditors, the local court in Landshut, Germany, appointed the restructuring expert Dr Michael Jaffé from the law firm JAFFÉ Rechtsanwälte Insolvenzverwalter to be the temporary insolvency administrator. As recently as March 2013 VISEON had announced a capital injection in the form of a shareholders’ loan. This had become necessary in order to ensure the strong growth of the company and the associated pre-financing of personnel and materials costs necessary for production. Unexpectedly, however, the payment was delayed due to an approval process on the part of the majority shareholder. Joachim Reinmuth, Chairman of the VISEON management board, said: “We already had to slow down production over recent weeks since we lacked the means to purchase material. Since wage and salary payments are now due, we filed for the initiation of insolvency proceedings, in the interest of our staff member as well as the company and its creditors. Our aim is to optimally use the restructuring opportunities offered by insolvency proceedings and to continue our business operation.” The temporary insolvency administrator has already initiated the pre-financing of the insolvency payment for the staff members, so that they can receive the payments due to them as quickly as possible. -- At its facility in Pilsting, VISEON Bus GmbH develops and produces coaches, public-transit buses with electric drive as well as apron buses. American Airlines sells GSE maintenance facility at LHR

Rushlift Ltd has acquired the ground support equipment maintenance facility at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) from American Airlines (AA). The deal secures several jobs at the facility and marks an acceleration of the company’s expansion in to the market, having already secured contracts to supply and maintain GSE equipment for two major airlines. Rushlift GSE will operate out of the existing LHR base at Elmdon Road, close to British Airways’ Vanguard House, and will continue to support AA, as well as other key customers, for whom it currently maintains on ramp equipment. Calgary Airport commits to ARINC’s support for CUPPS

Calgary Airport Authority has signed a 10-year contract extension with ARINC for its Common Use Passenger Processing Systems (CUPPS), which will be maintained on site by ARINC’s wholly owned subsidiary, ARINC Managed Services (AMS) LLC. The contract, which runs until 2022, includes ARINC’s vMUSE, BagLink, Common Use Self Service (CUSS) and Local Departure Control System (L-DCS) systems. As part of the agreement, all of the airport’s current systems are being updated to reflect the latest standards, including an upgrade of vMUSE to the current IATA CUPPS Standard version 1.3. Mehr »
Virtual Assistant helps Boston Airport Passengers

Tensator has announced that, after successfully deploying Carla, Boston Logan Airport’s bi-lingual Tensator Virtual Assistant to inform and guide millions of passengers quickly and efficiently through its Terminal E security checkpoint, the airport has signed on three additional Tensator Virtual Assistants. The attention-catching Virtual Assistants are deployed at Terminals A, B and C, providing essential security information including messages on ID and boarding passes, federal regulations regarding liquids, garment removal and X-ray machine instructions. Messages are delivered in both English and Spanish, providing passengers with consistent, surround sound audio accompanied by highly visual information to ensure passengers clearly understand all the information they need to know in order to improve efficiency, passenger flow and their overall airport experience. CATSA orders explosives detection systems for USD 100m

Morpho Detection has received a USD 100 million contract from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) for the delivery of explosives detection systems. As part of the five-year contract, the company will deliver its high-, medium-, and low-speed and over-length explosives detection systems (EDS) to support CATSA’s next-generation baggage screening programme. Initially, Morpho Detection will deliver eight compact CTX 5800 and four high-speed CTX 9800 DSi systems for deployment at Canadian airports in 2013. Mehr »
JBT AeroTech lands major order for aircraft deicing vehicles

JBT AeroTech has been awarded contracts worth more than USD 9 million by a large international air carrier for the supply of aircraft deicing vehicles. The Tempest™ deicers will support both their de-icer renewal and expansion plans throughout their global network. John Lee, Vice President and Division Manager at JBT AeroTech, said: “This order represents the continued confidence placed in JBT’s leading de-icer technology to meet the varied deicing needs of both global and regional air carriers.” Delivery of the deicers is anticipated to be complete by the third quarter of 2013.
