Looking back at 20 inter airport Europe shows

Since its beginnings in 1977 at the US Air Force Base in Frankfurt, the exhibition has seen a massive development. Designed to give airport equipment providers a specialised platform outside the general aircraft exhibitions, the event started off as a small get-together for GSE providers and buyers. Over the years it evolved into the world’s leading International Exhibition for Airport Equipment, Technology, Design and Services. The exhibition is taking place in a two-year cycle and has become a must-attend event for airport professionals from all over the world.

1983 – Frankfurt Airport

In 1983, inter airport incorporated the first Air Cargo event: the show took place from 26-29 September 1983 and attracted a total of 230 exhibitors and 4,016 visitors.

The 20th edition of inter airport Europe is taking place in 2015

In its first years, inter airport was a ground support equipment show. Over the decades, the show profile was rounded off to include the comprehensive portfolio of a one-stop-shop for the entire airport industry, ranging from ground handling, terminal operations, security systems and architectural components to airport IT. In its early years, inter airport was combined with other shows, for example AIR CARGO, AIRMEC (aviation maintenance) and the AIR NAV COM (air traffic control, navigation and communication equipment for aviation). Years later, the category interTERMINAL was added to the existing category interRAMP. The category interDATA followed after a couple of years; the most recent addition was interDESIGN which became more and more important in the 2000s.

The main trends of the industry varied largely over the last forty years. In the late eighties, when air travel experienced enormous growth rates and new airports were built across the globe, airport planning and furnishing gained a new dimension. Investing in state-of-the-art technology to speed up passenger, baggage, aircraft and cargo handling became crucial for airport operators, as their business environment had suddenly become highly competitive. In the early nineties the focus was on flight safety, the increasing air freight, the replacement of manual processes by electronics, faster and more efficient fire-fighting equipment and enhancing passenger comfort. These trends and innovations soon became a standard and today technologies are focussing on subjects such as security, automation, sustainability and environment, mobility and data exchange.

After eleven shows at Frankfurt Airport, inter airport Europe moved to Munich Airport in 1999. Since 2009 inter airport Europe is taking place at the Munich Trade Fair Centre where it continues to grow; in 2015 a third hall has been added to meet the high demand of companies who wish to exhibit at the show.
