Smiths Detection will upgrade London Luton Airport’s (LLA) security screening as part of the UK airport’s GBP 100 million transformation project. The contract will include the delivery of a new passenger screening technology including the HI-SCAN 6040-2is X-ray scanners and the new Checkpoint.Evo networked checkpoint system, together with the rapid tray return system supplied by Herbert Systems. The HI-SCAN 6040-2is dual-view X-ray inspection system is used for detecting explosives at checkpoints where bags and personal belongings are screened. LLA will be the first airport in Europe to install Checkpoint.Evo for regular security operations. The technology links individual sensors within a fully networked system that helps in enhancing checkpoint inspection and integration capacities. The inspection process and operational efficiency is enhanced by data collection, distribution and management. The technology will help in improving security capabilities besides easing passenger flow through security checks, minimizing waiting times and simplifying processes for customer-facing staff.
