New smart gates for Dubai Airport
26 July 2013
Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) and Emaratech have signed a contract to manufacture and deploy smart gates at Dubai International Airport. The collaboration will also be responsible for modernizing immigration counters to improve passengers’ passport control procedures. In January 2013, about 14 smart gates had been commissioned at Dubai airport’s Terminal 3, while 14 more gates are planned to be deployed at Terminal 1 and 2 by end of summer 2013. DAEP and Emaratech are also planning to install the system at Al-Maktoum International Airport. Smart gates work by detecting and verifying users through their biometrically enhanced passports, ID cards or e-gate cards leveraging facial and eye recognition technology. Upon deployment, the automated and secure self-service will enable passengers to complete their passport control procedures within 20 sec and allow passengers to move instantly to baggage reclaim areas. Passengers who want to avoid waiting at immigration counters can register their biometrics details before travelling and use the smart gate for free. According to the airport, the deployed smart gates are able to detect electronic passports from the 33 pre-approved visa nations, UAE citizens, residents and GCC nationals.
