The scheduled opening on 1 April 2013 of Qatar’s new international airport in Doha has been “indefinitely postponed” after it failed to meet security standards, according to local reports. The Hamad International Airport did not meet the civil defence department’s “newly introduced safety and security requirements”, said Abdul Aziz al-Nuaimi, the head of Qatar’s civil aviation authority, without giving a new date for the opening. Built at a cost of USD 15 billion, the airport will have the capacity to handle 28 million passengers per year when it is fully operational later in 2013, and its sponsors seek to expand that figure to 50 million by 2020.
